First, you write your book and edit it until you are satisfied, on your own or with the help of critique partners. Your book doesn’t need to be perfect (your agent will probably edit it, and then an editor will do that too), but it must be the best you can make it. Once that’s done, you’ll have to write a query letter and research agents. Following each agent’s individual guidelines, you’ll have to submit the query and a sample of your writing. If the agent is interested they will ask for your full novel. If they love it and think they can represent it (and you), they will offer representation.

Once you have an agent, they will edit the book with you and try and sell it to editors.
